New Projects in the New Year. . .

Posted on December 29, 2009. Filed under: decorating |

You see old paneling and dirty carpet...I see a new bedroom and space for an arcade game alcove!

Now that the holidays are over I can return to thinking about our next big set of DIY projects. We have already started demolition on the ground level of our beach house.

You see industrial carpet, and a room with few windows...I see a cozy spot to watch television and the perfect place for a pool table!

It looks kind of scary right now. This is the stage I call “Renovator’s Denial”. You see a space that is dingy and a little nasty whereas I (the renovator) keep saying things like “It’s amazing what a new floor and a coat of paint can do.” I simply gloss over the many steps that take place before we are ready for flooring and paint. Not to mention the fact that we need to completely gut and rebuild two bathrooms. . . I said not to mention it!

We will only get to do one bathroom before the rental season starts so the other one will have a very friendly padlock on it when our rental season starts.

This is the bathroom we ARE doing this year.

That is a claw foot tub under a piece of plywood!

It's currently up on blocks of wood. We are not sure why.

It is up on blocks of wood. I told you this was not an easy project. We need to raise the level of the floor (you currently step down into the room) then the tub won’t need platform shoes. The walls are cheap paneling and the fixtures are all junk. And this is the easy bathroom to fix!

Now you might understand why the dreaming, planning and denial are all necessary parts of the process when we take on a project like this. I prefer to think of it NOT as denial, but as optimism.

Have you ever experienced Renovator’s Optimism?

Another Great Christmas Eve!

Posted on December 27, 2009. Filed under: decorating |

We are still recovering from hosting our annual Christmas Eve Feast. It was a great success. The menu was delicious, the house was decorated and the guests were in a festive mood.

The decorating lasted until the last moment and of course, I did not take pictures of everything I did. I did manage to snap a few shots during the evening so here are some pics from the party as well as a few that I took earlier and didn’t post.

We will spend the next month putting the house back to normal but first I need to preserve it so we can celebrate a second Christmas with my in-laws. It is a new tradition we started a couple of years ago so that they get to experience a little bit of Christmas with us.

Even More Christmas Decorating!

Posted on December 21, 2009. Filed under: decorating |

I am entering the final stages of holiday decorating. I moved my dining room furniture into it’s “Feast of the Seven Fish” arrangement. I still need to add the final elements and the chaffing dishes.

I created some new wreaths for the breakfast area in my kitchen. I used some plain faux wreaths I have had for years

One of several faux wreaths I've had for years.

added some half price berry wreaths I bought at Michaels

These were 50% off. They don;t look like much...yet

and finally some clusters of silver and gold jingle bells

These were in the miniatures aisle. I attached them using floral wire.

Here they are in place hung by gold ribbons.

My DIY trio of wreaths! (and lots of snow)

We have a small sitting area in here and we always have a group of guests that prefer to gather in the warmth and intimacy of the kitchen. I like to make the space festive for them as well as for those  of us hard at work in the kitchen.

We have been snowed in so I have not been able to add our outdoor decor yet but I hope to get my outdoor wraeth and my pair of light-up reindeer out before the big night.

I also still need to decorate our lower level recreation room. So far it just has a tree.
