Here goes my first attemot to participate in a DIY Day at A Soft Place to Land. I am posting a picture of the before of our ktchen at our beach house. It;s hard to see because these are photos we took as we were deciding whether to buy it (and to start the renovation list).

It was old sheet linoleum that was faded, worn and cracked.

Here is a picture of the floor that we (my husband and some handy friends) installed right over the old floor.

These are commercial grade linolem tiles. The same kind they use in public schools, hospitals and medical offices. They come in some fantastic colors. I was inspired to design this color combination when I took my children to see the pediatrician. They had this same color combination in their examination rooms. We decided on the concentric squares because it fit the space and reminded me of a nautical flag (this is at the beach afterall).

This was not a difficult job. Just time consuming. we had to use industrial glue and it was smelly and took a while to fully cure. Then we (my husband) had to coat it with several layers of wax.

We love it! Plus when I need to describe my house to someone who was looking at several vacation rental choices, as soon as I say “you know, the one with the blue and yellow kitchen floor” they always know exactly which house I mean.

We have made other changes in the kitchen but nothing major yet. The budget just can’t take that on right now. We hope to update the appliances, paint the cabinets and change the countertop/backsplash….Someday.

Until next time, make yours a

I love the tiles! We installed these in our 1963 Airstream that we gutted and redid this year! I love them so much because they come in great colors! Great job!
